A highlight of this whole-house remodel is the balustrade above the stairwell. Surplus flooring material was used for the newell post, with solid hickory rails finished to match. Steel balusters were precision fit into the rails without the need for fasteners, creating a beautiful railing that also meets the safety needs of a home with a young child.
Western Montana's Flathead Lake is surrounded by cherry orchards, whose fruit is a mid-summer highlight for local residents and visitors. Cherry was selected for this project as a reminder of this regional favorite. Joints were cut by hand and provide structural strength as well as eye-catching finish details. Each plank in the tabletop was selected to highlight cherry's beautiful contrast of heartwood and sapwood.
Several dead cottonwood trees stood on this property before construction began on this elegant modern farmhouse. The homeowners wanted to incorporate this material into the build, so Corvus felled several of the trees and had them milled into planks by a local sawyer. The rough planks were then shaped and sanded to become case trim for the entry door and windows as well as shiplap siding for the exterior entry wall. The corners were trimmed with raw angle steel to match decorative elements inside the home. Live edges were retained on some cottonwood planks that became shelving in a custom wine cabinet.
